Description
Middelvlei Cabernet Sauvignon Momberg 1989 750ml is a rare and highly collectible Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon from the historic Middelvlei Wine Estate, a family-owned property with more than a century of winemaking tradition. Produced by the Momberg family, this mature vintage reflects the classic Stellenbosch style of the late 1980s, when the estate focused on crafting structured, age-worthy wines from estate-grown fruit. Traditional cellar techniques and careful oak maturation produced a Cabernet Sauvignon with the balance and longevity required for extended bottle ageing. More than three decades later, well-preserved bottles have become prized collector’s items, offering a fascinating glimpse into South Africa’s fine wine heritage and the enduring quality of mature Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon.
The bouquet displays beautifully evolved aromas of cassis, blackcurrant, violets, cedar, forest floor, tobacco, and earthy spice, with subtle hints of leather and dried herbs developed through extended bottle maturation. On the palate, elegant dark fruit is supported by bright acidity and softened tannins, creating a refined, graceful wine with savoury complexity and remarkable freshness for its age. The finish is long, dry, and persistent with lingering notes of cedar, graphite, and mature black fruit. Middelvlei Cabernet Sauvignon Momberg 1989 is best enjoyed with roast lamb, venison, beef fillet, mushroom dishes, or mature hard cheeses, making it an exceptional choice for collectors and lovers of mature South African wines.
